Funded through the City of Chicago and the Chicago Public Library Foundation, the Chicago Public Library's 31st Summer Reading Program for children celebrated nature, the environment and conservation in partnership with the Chicago Department of Environment, Garfield Park Conservatory, the Chicago Park District and Chicago Wilderness. Participating children read, reported on books of their choosing and had fun with green programs and projects. Children received a sticker for their book log for each book read, won book prizes and earned  Read Green, Live Green t-shirtsby reading lots of books!

Books and programs about birds, butterflies, gardening, garbage and more turned Chicago’s children into advocates for a cleaner, green Chicago! For more information, visit Chicago Public Library or download the PDF.

The Chicago Public Library, in partnership with Garfield Park Conservatory and Chicago Department of Environment, presented Read Green, Live Green: Summer Reads for Adults – a summer long exploration of the environment through a unique combination of great books, author appearances, tours, performances and fun “green” workshops and events designed especially for adults and teens.  Over 5,000 took part in this environmentally-focused summer reading program. Parents and caregivers of young people enrolled in the Children’s Summer Reading Program found this program to be a wonderful opportunity to read and discuss the same theme together this summer.
